Hi Dena, I would like to know if you ever come to Australia to teach?

    Thank you

    Kind Regards

    Sharyn

    • Sharyn–Thanks for asking! I will be teaching at the Taupo Symposium in New Zealand in 2013, and will be looking for opportunities in Australia on my way there . . .

I’d like to design a quilt for seven women friends who are climbing Kilimanjaro in September. All are over 50, with health issues, who’ve decided to “just climb.” I’m training with them and want to commemorate their climb with something special. Any ideas for a visual representation of the mountain?

    • Hi, Pat, and thanks for commenting. You know, the usual thing would be to take a photo of Kili and interpret it as a quilt. Why not do something more original? Why not investigate the mysteries that surround the mountain (it’s sacred, you know?), and make a quilt that depicts imagery that you acquire as you study those myths and legends? My friend Magie Relph who owns the African Fabric Shop in the UK has proposed an African Quilt Challenge that gives full instructions. You can find it on the Kenya Quilt Guild’s blog at http://kenyaquiltguild.wordpress.com; just check the sidebar for challenges!

I wish all your friends a great time on their trek. I’ve never done it myself, although I’ve been up to 14,000 feet on Mt. Kenya. I understand the hike up Kili is more gentle. Mt. Kenya looks like it’s pretty much straight up. I didn’t do well, either, with altitude change; kept falling asleep!! Please give your friends my greetings and wishes for a more successful climb than any I have attempted (good they are in training!).
