“Fractures,” a Designer Pinwheels Quilt Pattern

Fractures, a Designer Pinwheel Quilt and Pattern by Dena Crain

“Fractures” Designer Pinwheel Quilt Pattern

Finished Dimensions: 27″ x 27″ (69 cm x 69 cm)

Fractures is a typical Designer Pinwheel quilt based on four-fold rotation of a tessellated right triangle.  Silk dupioni fabrics give the quilt lustre and color richness.

The pattern is for one tessellated triangle only.  You must cut and piece the pattern’s patches four times to complete the quilt top.  Add seam allowances to all patches.

Standard strip piecing to create a striped fabric is what makes Fractures lively.  Follow the illustration to see which patches were cut from this strip-pieced material.  You can piece a stripe or use a commercially printed stripe for ease and convenience.  You can use the stripe for patches other than those shown here, leaving those rendered in stripes as solids if you prefer.

The border shown above measures 2″ (5 cm) finished.  Its outermost edges were rolled to the back and sewn down by hand.  Cut your borders to the finished width plus inside seam allowance and at least 1″ (2.5 cm) to roll over to the back.  Fussy cut the border pieces and miter the corners.

Dashed lines indicate suggested quilting lines in addition to stitch-in-the-ditch used to define each patch in the quilt.  These quilting lines are different from those I sewed in the original quilt.  The new lines will better preserve the beauty of the complex piecing.  You may use these or any other quilting lines of your choice.

In the original quilt, I added a great deal of Outline Piecing, a technique I developed for sewing accurate piping into a quilt top.  Instructions for this technique and for sewing Inset Angles can be obtained by registering for my online quilt class Designer Pinwheels at Quilt University.  If you take my class Designer Pinwheels, you will learn all the construction techniques needed to make this quilt as well as how to design your own Designer Pinwheel quilts.

You will need Adobe Reader to view and print the pattern. You can download Adobe Reader safely and for free if you do not already have it on your computer.
