Lilac and Clover, a Designer Pinwheel Quilt
Finished Dimensions 36″ x 36″
Lilac and Clover is an extraordinary Designer Pinwheel quilt based on four-fold rotation of a tessellated right triangle. Hand-dyed and commercially printed cotton fabrics come together to make an exciting but gentle color statement with plenty of impact.
Appliqué or piece the patchwork on the inner background fabric. Then mount the center patchwork motif on a separate sheet of background fabric (cut to 36″ or 91.44 mm or other finished quilt size) and cut away that background behind the center panel before quilting to reduce bulk.
Add a finished measurement strip 7/8″ (.9-1 cm) wide of contrasting color fabric as a narrow border.
If you are so inclined, you can spend a great deal of time and make yourself crazy trying to mark this quilt for quilting, or you can set aside the diagram and quilt entirely freehand. If you look closely you will see that is exactly how the original was quilted.
I am fond of dividing shapes into halves, thirds, quarters and more to make quilting easy and quick without marking. I kept feed-dogs up while quilting. These curves are mostly gentle enough to sew without resorting to free motion quilting, but I leave that choice up to you. Also, I quilted each quadrant of this quilt with a different pattern to give added spontaneity and interest.
Quilt the outer background with any free motion pattern of your choice.
The center intersection may be messy due to all the seams coming together there. Cover that center area with some kind of embellishment. I used silver metallic cord there and as outlines elsewhere.
Bind your quilt with a 1/2″ (1.2 cm) binding. Add hanger sleeve and label and please be sure to credit me for the design; thanks!
