Prickly Pear Cactus in Kenya

Due to cultural constraints, none of the other uses of Prickly Pear Cactus have yet been discovered and exploited in Kenya. The people here turn up their noses at the idea of eating either the fruits or the pads (nopales or nopalitos) of this plant which is a common foodstuff in Mexico and parts of the US, even around the Mediterranean. Persian Carpet Flower – Inspiration for a Quilt?

This superb little blossom on a local succulent merits its name – Edithcolea grandis. With a surface that feels like velvet, these “Persian carpet” flowers appear seasonally and measure up to about 3″ in width. Continue reading
